Zyprexa®
(generic: Olanzapine)
Zyprexa is an antipsychotic medication. It belongs to a large category of medications that affect the mind, called psychotropics. Antipsychotic medicines are psychotropic medications that treat the symptoms of psychotic disorders such as schizophrenia. Zyprexa is a newer kind of antipsychotic medication known as an atypical antipsychotic. Olanzapine is believed to work by balancing the chemicals naturally found in the brain. It may help relieve your symptoms so you feel better. As your symptoms improve, you will be better able to start getting your life back on track.

Possible side effects of Zyprexa
Stop taking olanzapine and seek emergency medical attention if you experience an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing; closing of the throat; swelling of the lips, tongue, or face; or hives) to olanzapine.
Contact your doctor immediately or seek medical attention if you experience uncontrollable movements of the mouth, tongue, cheeks, jaw, arms, or legs.
Contact your doctor immediately or seek medical attention if you experience fever, sweating, severe muscle stiffness (rigidity), confusion, fast or irregular heart beats. These could be symptoms of a potentially fatal side effect called Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome (NMS).
Other, less serious side effects may be more likely to occur. Continue to take olanzapine and talk to your doctor if you experience:
dizziness or drowsiness;
agitation;
an increased heart rate;
constipation;
dry mouth;
weight gain; or
increased blood sugar (may be detected by blood tests or cause symptoms such as increased thirst and urination).
